A mistake now would alert Jared, and he would lock me out of the accounts before I could secure my assets.

“Dr. Aris’s office, this is Nurse Helen.”

“Helen, it’s Shelby Harlan,” I said. “My husband mentioned that Courtney Briggs is scheduled for her prenatal screening tomorrow.”

“Ah, yes, Mrs. Harlan. We have her down for the early morning slot.”

The nurse’s voice was warm, unsuspecting.

“Jared asked me to verify the details for the billing,” I continued.

“He wants to make sure the private genetic testing is billed directly to our personal trust, not the insurance.”

“Of course,” Helen said. “I can update that in the system right now.”

“And the genetic screening,” I added, my heart pounding in my throat. “It’s the non-invasive prenatal test, correct? The one that includes the paternity confirmation?”

There was a brief silence on the line.

“Yes, that’s correct,” Helen said slowly. “Mr. Harlan requested the full panel, including the familial markers.”

“Excellent,” I said. “Could you send the laboratory intake forms to my personal email? I want to make sure his signature is on file.”
