“The second mortgage,” I said. “The one you had Janice Miller notarize.”

Linda’s face did not pale like Ethan’s had.

Instead, her jaw tightened.

She stood up taller, pulling her wool coat tighter around her shoulders.

“We did what we had to do to protect this family,” she said.

“You forged my signature,” I said.

“You are Ethan’s wife,” she said, stepping closer to me.

“Everything you have belongs to him too. Ryan is his brother. We are one family.”

“This house was bought with my mother’s money,” I said. “You had no right to touch it.”

“Your mother is gone, Sophia,” Linda said, her voice sharp and cold.

“And this house is in Ethan’s name as much as yours. We used the equity to save his brother from ruin.”

“You committed a felony,” I said.

“Who is going to prosecute?” she asked, a cruel smile touching her lips.

“Your own husband? Do you think the bank cares as long as the payments are made?”

“The payments won’t be made,” I said. “Because I’m freezing the accounts.”

Linda laughed, a dry, harsh sound.
