How My Husband and His Mother Lost Everything Trying to Steal My Inheritance
“Ethan just left,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “He threatened to sue for divorce. He says he’s going after the appreciation on my mother’s house and our joint accounts.”
There was a pause on the line, the sound of papers rustling in Marcus’s office.
“He can file whatever he wants, but proving appreciation on a separate property trust is extremely difficult,” Marcus said. “Especially if you didn’t use marital funds to maintain it. Did you?”
“No,” I said, looking down at the black binder. “I paid the property taxes from the estate account. But Marcus, he’s desperate. He’s draining our money.”
“We need to protect your assets immediately,” Marcus said. “I can file a motion for a temporary restraining order on your accounts first thing in the morning. That will freeze everything so he can’t move any more funds.”
“I found something else,” I said, my eyes tracking a wire transfer for twelve thousand dollars dated two weeks ago. “He’s been sending massive amounts of money to overseas accounts. He’s paying off Ryan’s debts.”
“Do you have documentation?” Marcus asked.
