“I’m looking at it right now,” I said. “Bank statements, wire receipts. He’s been using our joint savings to fund this.”

“Keep those safe,” Marcus said. “If he is wasting marital assets on his brother’s personal debts, a judge will look very unfavorably on that. We can claim dissipation of marital funds.”

“What about the text messages?” I asked, and read him the text I had received minutes earlier.

Marcus was silent for a moment.

“Thirty thousand dollars,” Marcus muttered. “And they are targeting you because they know about the inheritance. Sophia, you need to hire a forensic accountant.”

“Can you recommend someone?” I asked.

“I have a colleague, Sarah Vance,” Marcus said. “She specializes in tracking hidden assets and offshore accounts. I will send her your information tonight.”

“Thank you, Marcus,” I said.

“Lock your doors, Sophia,” he said gently. “And do not confront Ethan about what you found. Let him think he has the upper hand for now.”

We hung up, and the silence of the office closed in on me again.

I locked the desk drawer, put the key back under the coins, and took the black binder with me.
