How My Family Tried to Destroy Me and Ended Up Ruining Themselves
Arthur looked at me, a faint, sad smile touching his dry lips.
“It belongs to Sadie,” Arthur said. “It was always meant for Sadie, the moment she turned twenty-five.”
Wyatt stared at Arthur, then turned his gaze back to me, his eyes wide.
“They knew,” Wyatt whispered, his voice thick with sudden realization. “That’s why they tried to destroy you today before you could claim it.”
“They found out I was going to retrieve the box,” Arthur said. “Your mother caught me in the basement, took my keys, and boarded up the window.”
“Where is the lockbox now, Mr. Bennett?” Detective Harper asked.
“Still behind the furnace,” Arthur said. “Under the loose concrete slab. Your parents couldn’t find it.”
Harper stood up and tapped her shoulder radio. “Dispatch, I need a unit to secure the basement of the Davis property immediately.”
Before the dispatcher could reply, the heavy wooden door to my examination room flew open.
Melanie stood in the doorway, her hair disheveled, her expensive coat torn at the shoulder, and her eyes wild with panic.
