Two police officers were grabbing her arms, trying to pull her back into the crowded hallway.

“Sadie!” Melanie screamed, her voice echoing off the tiled walls. “You think you won?”

“Get her out of here,” Wyatt said, stepping between my sister and my hospital bed.

Melanie struggled against the officers, her gaze dropping to the blood on my collar, then shifting to the gurney.

Her eyes widened in horror as she recognized the old man lying under the blankets.

“You’re supposed to be dead,” Melanie hissed, her voice dropping to a terrifying, quiet whisper.

She reached into her deep coat pocket, her hand moving fast.

“Officer, she has something!” Wyatt yelled, lunging forward.

Wyatt lunged forward, grabbing Melanie’s wrist before she could swing her arm.

An officer slammed her against the doorframe, forcing her hand open.

A small, silver utility knife clattered to the linoleum floor.

Melanie screamed, a high, desperate sound, as the officers pinned her arms behind her back.

“She’s out of her mind,” Wyatt breathed, stepping back and checking his hands for cuts.

“Get her down to the holding cell,” Detective Harper ordered.
