“What date, Daniel?” I demanded, my hand hovering over the keypad.

“The date of your first deployment,” he said, his voice frantic.

“The day you left.”

The timer on the safe ticked down to fifteen seconds.

My mind raced, trying to recall the exact date of my deployment orders from two years ago.

My fingers trembled over the cold buttons.

Ten seconds.

I pressed the first digit.

Nine.

Eight.

Seven.

I pressed the final button and held my breath as the timer stopped at three seconds.

The safe clicked.

The heavy steel door swung open an inch.

Inside, a small black USB drive was glowing with a steady blue light.

Beside it lay a thick, leather-bound notebook.

I reached in and grabbed the drive, its plastic casing warm to the touch.

“We got it,” I said, exhaling a breath I didn’t realize I was holding.

“This is the ledger,” Miller said, taking the notebook.

“This will tie the foreign accounts directly to her shell companies.”

Daniel stood in the doorway, his eyes fixed on the USB drive in my hand.
