“The donation was made by the Holloway Trust,” Margaret said, her voice cutting through his panic. “The trust that has just removed you from its board.”

She handed a folded piece of paper to the security director.

“This is the active restraining order signed by Judge Vance twenty minutes ago,” Margaret said. “Mr. Holloway must remain at least five hundred yards away from his ex-wife and his children.”

Grant stared at the paper.

The realization seemed to hit him all at once.

His shoulders slumped, and the anger in his eyes turned into raw fear.

“You can’t do this to me,” he whispered, looking at me. “I have nothing left.”

“You have what you chose,” I said.

The security guards took him by the arms.

They did not drag him, but they guided him firmly toward the elevators.

Grant did not fight them. He looked small as the elevator doors slid shut.

I turned back into the quiet room.

Arthur was standing by the window, watching the rain pour down over the city skyline.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“Yes,” I said.
