“Anything involving Victoria concerns me,” Daniel said.

He stepped slightly in front of me, his broad shoulder blocking James from my view.

“I heard what you said to her about the inventory records.”

“You’re trying to blackmail a nurse because your own pockets are dirty.”

James’s face flushed a deep, angry red.

He looked around the empty lobby, his eyes darting toward the security desk.

The guard was looking at his phone, completely unaware of the tension near the glass doors.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about,” James hissed.

“Mark Bell and I have spent five years building the capital campaign for this facility.”

“If I walk away, the entire expansion project collapses.”

“The hospital board knows exactly who brings in the checks.”

I felt a cold sweat break out on the back of my neck.

“The expansion project is a front,” I said, my voice shaking but clear.

James glared at me over Daniel’s shoulder.

“Be very careful, Victoria,” he warned.

“One word from me to the Chief of Medicine, and your career is finished.”

“I am the chairman of the development committee.”
