Linda and Hannah were arguing in whispers with their lawyer.

“It was Luke,” Luis said. “He had a suitcase.”

“He was trying to take files from your desk.”

“Where is he now?” I asked.

“The police just arrived,” Luis said. “We have him detained in the lobby.”

“He is in handcuffs, Captain.”

“Thank you, Luis,” I said. “I am on my way.”

I hung up and looked at Sarah.

“It was Luke,” I said. “He’s at my building. The police have him.”

Hannah looked up when she heard her husband’s name.

She stood up and walked toward our table.

“What did you do to Luke?” she demanded, her voice high and panicked.

“Your husband just got arrested at my apartment, Hannah,” I said.

“He broke into my home to steal my files.”

Hannah’s face went completely pale.

“No,” she whispered. “He was just supposed to get the papers.”

“What papers?” my father asked, stepping between me and Hannah.

“The financial records,” Linda said, walking up behind her daughter.

She looked smaller now, the defiance drained out of her.
