“Do you have a safe place to stay tonight, Captain?”

I looked around my apartment.

The home I had built, the sanctuary I had paid for with years of hard work.

“I have a colleague’s place in Fort Lauderdale,” I said.

“Or I can check into an airport hotel.”

“Do the hotel,” Sarah said.

“Keep the receipt.”

“We will add the cost to the damages in the lawsuit.”

“Pack a bag and leave through the garage.”

“I’m on it,” I said.

I hung up and went to my bedroom.

I pulled my flight bag from the closet.

I packed a few changes of clothes, my passport, and my pilot’s logbook.

Every sound in the hallway made me tense.

I walked to the window and looked down at the street.

A black SUV was parked idling near the entrance of the garage.

The windows were heavily tinted.

I couldn’t see who was inside.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it was a voicemail notification from Hannah.

I clicked play, setting it to speaker.

“Mark, please,” she sobbed into the microphone.

“They took Luke.”

“They have him, Mark.”
