Why My Family Tried to Sign Away My Life Without My Consent
I flipped to the signature page at the back.
My name was typed on the line designated for the temporary guardian.
Directly above it, there was a signature.
It was written in blue ink, a cursive signature that looked exactly like mine.
My hand started to shake.
“You forged my signature,” I said.
The lobby fountain splashed behind us, the only sound in the sudden silence.
“It’s not a forgery, Mark,” Hannah whispered, her voice cracking. “We just did it to speed up the process.”
“You signed my name on a legal court document,” I said.
I looked at the notary stamp on the bottom of the page.
The name on the stamp was someone I had never heard of.
“Who is this notary?” I asked.
“A friend of Luke’s,” Linda said quickly. “He did us a favor.”
“This is fraud,” I said. “This is a felony.”
Hannah stepped closer to me, her eyes red and wide.
She smelled like stale coffee and airport perfume.
“We had no choice,” Hannah said. “We have to leave, Mark. Tonight.”
“Leave where?” I asked.
“Costa Rica,” she whispered.
