Why My Family Tried to Sign Away My Life Without My Consent
Vance stood up and walked to a filing cabinet.
“I will draft a formal report of identity theft and file it with the state attorney’s office.”
“We will need to get a judge to void that guardianship petition immediately.”
“If they present that to your bank, they could freeze your active accounts within twenty-four hours.”
“Please do whatever it takes,” I said, handing him a retainer check.
I left his office and walked out into the heavy afternoon heat.
The sun was blinding as it reflected off the asphalt.
My phone vibrated in my pocket as I reached my car.
It was an incoming call from Hannah.
I hesitated, then pressed the button and placed the phone to my ear.
“Mark, please don’t hang up,” she said, her voice shaking.
“I have nothing to say to you, Hannah,” I said.
“You tried to take control of my life.”
“You stole my identity.”
“It wasn’t my idea,” she sobbed.
“Then whose idea was it?” I asked, starting the engine.
“Luke told me it was the only way to save the business,” she said.
“He said you had plenty of money and wouldn’t even notice a temporary loan.”
“A loan?” I laughed coldly.
“You forged my signature on legal documents.”
