I sat in a cracked leather chair opposite his desk.
“I brought everything,” I said, placing the briefcase on his desk.
“Let’s see it,” Vance said.
He opened the briefcase and began sorting through the papers with practiced speed.
He didn’t speak for five minutes as he scanned the bank transfers and the guardianship petition.

“This is very clean work,” Vance said, looking up.
“Clean in the sense that they left a massive paper trail.”
“Your sister used an online notary service that requires digital verification.”
“But she bypassed the verification by using an old photo of your passport.”
“How did she get your passport?” he asked.

“I keep a spare key to my apartment at my mother’s house for emergencies,” I said.
“They must have let themselves in while I was on a flight to London last month.”
“They took the passport, scanned it, and put it back.”
“It appears that way,” Vance said, tapping his pen on the desk.
“And this LLC, L&H Holdings, was registered just three weeks ago.”
