“She didn’t just stop the foreclosure,” Matthew said to the camera, though he was looking directly at Alvaro. “She rebuilt the title deed from scratch. She did it pro bono, at night, while you were drinking with your partners at the country club.”

Alvaro stared at him, his mouth slightly open.

“She protected my family from you,” Matthew said. “She gave us our lives back. You didn’t even know she did it.”

“She was my wife,” Alvaro muttered, his hand trembling slightly as he reached for the desk. “She was supposed to represent my interests.”

“Her interest was justice,” Matthew said. “Yours was just accumulation.”

Lucía watched the screen, her breathing shallow and fast.

On the monitor, Matthew leaned over the desk, placing both hands on the polished wood.

“The entire structure of Horizonte Capital is built on sand, Alvaro,” Matthew said.

“We have three billion in assets,” Alvaro spat, his face flushing red. “We are untouchable.”

“You have three billion in promises,” Matthew said. “Most of those promises are backed by ghost collateral in Delaware.”
