“You walked away from it,” he said.

I heard the sound of another door opening on his end of the line.

A new voice spoke, muffled and hurried.

“Sir,” the voice said to Alvaro. “We have a problem with the gateway.”

Alvaro did not answer him immediately.

“What is it?” Alvaro asked the man.

“The files,” the man said. “They are moving.”

I stared at my laptop screen.

The progress bar on the server sync was suddenly jumping.

The IP address from Horizonte Capital was flashing red.

Someone was downloading the main directory from the inside.

“Inés?” Lucía asked, pointing at the screen. “Is that you doing that?”

“No,” I whispered.

I looked at the screen as the files transfer rate doubled.

It wasn’t me, and it wasn’t Matthew.

“What is happening?” Alvaro demanded on the phone, his voice suddenly sharp with alarm.

“The server is being wiped, sir,” the voice in his office said. “The backup servers too.”

I held my breath.

On my screen, the files from Horizonte Capital began to disappear, one by one.

“Alvaro?” I asked.

The phone line crackled with static.
