“They ran his personal emails,” Alvaro said. “They went back three years.”
I felt a cold sweat break out along the back of my neck.
“They found the connection, Inés,” he said.
“There is no connection,” I lied.
“Don’t play the lawyer with me,” Alvaro snapped. “Not tonight.”
His voice rose slightly, losing its polished edge.
“He has been feeding you my personal schedules,” Alvaro said. “The private ledger. The transfer logs for the Swiss accounts.”
“He was protecting himself,” I said.
“He was betraying me,” Alvaro hissed. “For months. Every single day he sat at the desk outside my office.”
Lucía stood up from the sofa, her eyes wide with panic.
She pointed to the computer screen, which was still displaying the IP addresses.
I shook my head at her, signaling for silence.
“How did you find him, Alvaro?” I asked, keeping my voice steady.
“My team is thorough,” he said. “They monitored the server logs from the cottage.”
He let out a dry, humorless laugh.
“You used a secure burner,” Alvaro said. “But Matthew used his home network to test the connection yesterday morning.”
