“Is there anyone else named in these files?” I asked.

She wiped her face with the sleeve of her coat.

“There are transaction logs,” she said, breathing heavily.

“Some of them list Matthew’s personal account as a clearing channel.”

I tightened my grip on the edge of the desk.

“Matthew?”

“Yes,” she said. “But he didn’t know either. He thought he was just moving operational funds for the Barcelona properties.”

I turned back to the window, staring out at the rain.

If Matthew’s name was on those logs, Alvaro held him by the throat as well.

The pieces of Alvaro’s escape plan were falling into place.

He would sacrifice Lucía to the authorities, blackmailer Matthew into silence, and walk away with the remaining liquid assets of Horizonte Capital.

But he did not have the children.

And he did not have the Sarrià files that could link the Swiss accounts directly to his personal signature.

“Matthew called me before I boarded the train,” Lucía said, her voice barely audible.

“He said he was at the Sarrià house.”

I turned around quickly.

“Did he find the lockbox?”
