Caroline picked up her phone and saved the audio file to a secure folder.
“We have the emails, too,” Caroline said, pointing to the printed pages on the table.
“The ones where he told Rebecca he would rather see me in foster care than pay a dime of support.”
“He sent those from his personal email address ten years ago.”
I looked at the stack of paper, then at Rebecca.
“Why did you keep them?” I asked.
Rebecca wiped her cheeks with the sleeve of her coat.
“Because I knew this day would come,” she said.
“I knew Thomas would eventually run out of money or find something he wanted to take from you.”
“He’s a parasite, Sarah.”
“He always has been.”
“I was too weak to fight him back then, but I saved everything.”
Caroline stood up, her movement smooth and deliberate.
She walked to the kitchen counter and picked up a manila folder.
“We need to organize this,” she said.
“If he’s going to file by Monday, we need to have our own lawyer ready.”
