“And you?” I asked.
“I was a fool,” he said.

He finished bandaging Mara, using supplies from an old field kit on the desk.
Mara’s breathing eased slightly, her eyes fluttering closed as the pain subsided.
Raymond stood up and turned to face me.
He looked at my uniform, my wet hair, the dirt on my face.
“You look like a soldier,” he said.
“I am a soldier,” I said.
“But I don’t know who I’m fighting for anymore.”
“You’re fighting for the truth,” he said.
“That is why you came here.”
“I came because Voss is hunting us,” I said.
“He said you were weak.”
Raymond let out a dry, humorless laugh.
“Voss thinks anyone who feels guilt is weak,” he said.
“He has no concept of consequences.”
He walked over to the desk and picked up a small, silver thumb drive.
“Everything is here,” Raymond said, holding it up.
“The entire digital record of Project Blackwood.”
“The illegal funding?” I asked.
“Every cent,” he said.
