The Truth Buried Deep Inside My Father’s Empty New Jersey Coffin
I kept my hand inside my vest, my fingers clamped tightly around the cold plastic of the drive.
“She’s alive,” I said, my voice barely a whisper. “And she’s not alone.”
“She has whatever local authorities she could scramble,” Caroline said.
She shook her head slowly, her silver hair catching the blue light of the monitor.
“They will not survive the night.”
“Neither will Raymond, if you keep playing this game.”
The mention of my father’s name made my chest tighten.
I stared at her, trying to read the blank space behind her eyes.
“Raymond is dead,” I said. “I saw the empty coffin.”
“He faked his death to run from his own work,” Caroline said.
“But he did not run far enough.”
“Voss has him, Natalie.”
A cold drop of water fell from the ceiling, landing on my collarbone.
I didn’t blink.
“You’re lying,” I said.
“I do not lie about assets,” Caroline said.
“Voss holds him in the Virginia facility.”
“He is keeping him alive for one reason.”
“He needs the decryption keys that only Raymond possesses.”
