“No,” I said. “We’re going to discuss it right here.”
“Don’t make a scene,” he hissed. “Look around you. This is your sister’s night.”
“It’s my night too,” I said. “Or did you forget that we share a birthday?”
Chloe looked between the three of us, her eyes wide with confusion.
“What is he talking about?” Chloe asked, her voice rising. “What policy? What fire?”
“Chloe, go back to your friends,” my father commanded without looking at her.
“No, Dad,” Chloe said, her voice shaking now. “Tell me what’s happening. Why is Mom looking like she’s about to faint?”
I looked at my sister, the girl who had spent eighteen years in the sun while I stayed in the shade.
“Ten years ago, the house burned down,” I said to her.
“I know that,” Chloe said. “We lost everything. We had to start over.”
“We didn’t lose everything,” I said. “Dad took out a second insurance policy. A massive one. He used Mom’s grandmother’s name to hide the money.”
