Father took a step forward, his chest swelling as he tried to look imposing.

“Officer, there is no disturbance here,” Father said.

He forced a smile that did not reach his cold eyes.

“We are just celebrating my daughters’ eighteenth birthday.”

“The call we received was very specific, sir,” the younger officer said.

She pulled a small digital notepad from her belt.

“The caller stated that there was an active confrontation involving physical restraint and a disclosure of historical abuse and financial fraud.”

A murmur ran through the crowd of neighbors.

Mother shrank back, her fingers gripping the strap of her leather handbag so tightly her knuckles turned white.

“Who called?” Mother whispered, looking wildly around the patio.

Her eyes landed on Mr. Harrison, our next-door neighbor, who suddenly looked very interested in his leather loafers.

“I did,” a voice said from the back of the crowd.

It was Sarah, Chloe’s best friend from school.

She was standing near the outdoor bar, holding her phone in both hands.

“I heard what Chloe said,” Sarah said, her voice shaking but clear.

“And I saw how your husband grabbed her.”
