I ducked, throwing my right arm over my head as a shower of safety glass rained down on my neck and shoulders.
The cold winter air rushed into the cab, smelling of diesel exhaust and wet pavement.
My phone slipped from my fingers, clattering onto the floorboards near the clutch pedal.
Outside, a figure in a heavy dark parka sprinted away from the side of my truck, his boots slipping slightly on the packed snow of the yard.

He came running from the passenger side of the lead rig, his heavy work boots crunching loudly on the frozen ground.
He reached the shattered driver-side door and pulled himself up on the metal step, his face pale and tight with worry.
“Are you hit?” he asked, his gloved hand gripping the door frame.
“I’m fine,” I said, shaking the small glass cubes from my hair and coat.
I leaned down and retrieved my phone from the floor.
