“Sole legal and physical custody of Chloe is awarded to her biological mother, Claire Bennett.”
A soft sob escaped my throat, and I pressed my hand against my mouth to stifle it.
Samuel reached out and took my hand, squeezing it tight.
“The court orders an immediate transition of custody,” the judge continued.
“The child is currently in the care of the county social services department at the court’s annex.”
“Mrs. Bennett, you may proceed there immediately to collect your daughter.”
“This court is adjourned.”

“I have a house in Oregon,” I said.
“My sister bought it for me last year; it has a yard and a view of the pines.”
“We’re going there tonight.”
