Her shoulders shook violently as she wept, the sound filling the small room.

“I gave up everything for her,” Olivia cried, her voice muffled by her hands.

“I betrayed my best friend.”

She looked up at me, her face wet with tears and her eyeliner smeared.

“I’m so sorry, Claire.”

“I was so lonely, and she made me feel like I finally had a family.”

“I don’t care about her promises anymore,” I said, sitting on the edge of the sofa beside her.

“I care about my son.”

“But we have to stop her.”

“She has the wealth and the power to drag this out in court for years.”

“Unless we have proof of the bribes.”

Olivia wiped her eyes with the back of her hand, taking a deep, shuddering breath.

“The bribes,” she repeated.

“Yes,” Julian said.

“We have the clinic records, but we need the financial trail.”

“We need proof that Margaret authorized the offshore wire transfers to my father’s secret account.”

Olivia looked toward the small kitchen.

“I have her laptop,” she said.

“She left it at my apartment last week to let me review some legal documents.”
