“Olivia!” I screamed over the howling wind.

“Open the door!”

Behind me, Ethan and Julian came running up the steps, their clothes soaked through and clinging to their skin.

The heavy brass lock turned inside.

The door opened a few inches, held tightly by a thick security chain.

Olivia’s pale face appeared in the gap, her eyes red-rimmed and swollen.

“Claire, you shouldn’t be here,” she whispered, her voice trembling as she looked past me.

“Margaret’s people are on their way.”

“Let me in, Olivia,” I said, my voice steady despite the shaking of my hands.

“I know everything.”

When Olivia saw Ethan standing behind me, her expression hardened into pure anger.

“Why is he here?” she asked, her voice rising.

“He helped me get here,” I said.

“And he’s going to help me tell you the truth about Margaret.”

Olivia stared at me for a long second, her eyes darting to Julian, then back to me.

She unlatched the chain.

We crowded into the small, warm living room.

A fire crackled in the hearth, throwing long, orange shadows across the cedar-paneled walls.
