The concrete under my feet felt like it was shifting.

I looked over at Eli, who was huddled against Luca’s knee.

The boy was watching us, his large eyes reflecting the faint green light of Luca’s tactical watch.

“We have to get out of here,” Luca whispered from the shadows.

“The street level is too quiet,” Luca said. “I saw two black SUVs park near the old maintenance hatch.”

“Did they see you?” I asked.

“No,” Luca said. “But they are setting up a perimeter.”

“They have thermal gear,” Luca added. “I saw the red indicator lights on their helmets.”

I turned back to Isabella.

“Can you walk?” I asked her.

She nodded, but her knees were shaking.

“There is another exit,” she said. “Near the old coal chute.”

“Where does it lead?” I asked.

“To the canal,” she said. “But it is narrow.”

I took her arm, her coat felt thin under my palm.

“We go together,” I said.

“Dante,” she said, stopping me.

“We can’t just run,” she said.

“If Kane finds out I showed you the routing numbers, he will close the vaults,” she said.
