I felt a cold sensation in the pit of my stomach, a physical weight that seemed to pull me down.

“That’s not possible,” I said. “I review the accounts. I know every major investment.”

“You only know what they want you to see,” she said.

She slowly lowered the revolver, her strength seemingly evaporating.

Her arm dropped to her side, the gun dangling from her index finger.

“Five years ago, I found the transfer records,” she said. “I found the routing numbers. They led straight back to our main offices.”

“I tried to bring it to you,” she said, looking down at the concrete floor. “But someone intercepted me.”

“Who?” I asked.

“Kane’s people,” she said. “They told me that if I told you, you would have to kill me to protect the syndicate’s assets.”

“They said you knew all along.”

“I didn’t,” I said, my voice barely a whisper. “Bella, I swear to you, I didn’t know.”

“It doesn’t matter if you knew,” she said. “The money came from us.”

She looked up at me, her eyes hollow.
