The Sister Who Stole My Life and the Husband Who Paid the Price
“He took my social security number from the HR files before he locked me out of the system,” Melanie said.
“He ruined my credit.”
“He used my name to rent the Horizon Resort villa.”
My breath caught in my chest.
I looked at a photocopy of a driver’s license inside the folder.
The name printed on it was Melanie Harper.
But the photo on the license wasn’t Melanie.
I leaned closer, my heart stopping.
The face staring back at me from the forged ID was Chloe’s.
The phone in my coat pocket began to vibrate against my ribs.
I pulled it out.
It was a call from Chloe.
I slid my thumb across the screen, silencing the ringer, and placed the phone face down on the laminate table.
My hand was shaking so hard the plastic phone case clicked against the Formica.
“Aren’t you going to answer?” Melanie asked.
She was watching me closely, her fingers wrapped tight around a paper cup of black coffee.
“Not yet,” I said. “I need to understand this first.”
I looked down at the photocopy of the driver’s license.
