“He’s going to transfer it,” Chloe said from the back of the room.
We all looked at her.
“He told me we would have enough to live on forever,” Chloe said, her voice small. “He said he had a secure link set up through his personal laptop.”
Sarah Lin stood up and walked to the window, looking out at the city lights.
“If we freeze the account now, he’ll get an automated alert on his phone the moment he lands,” she said.
“And he’ll run,” I said.
“Exactly,” Sarah said. “We need him to actually initiate the transfer. If he executes the wire, it’s a federal wire fraud charge. The FBI can step in immediately.”
“But if he transfers it, the money is gone,” I said.
“Not if we set up a silent monitor,” Arthur said.
He walked over to the conference room phone and dialed a number.
“This is Arthur Vance,” he said into the speaker. “Put me through to the fraud division director. Use the emergency breakthrough code.”
A moment later, a deep voice answered the call. “Arthur. What’s happening?”
