Chloe frowned, her brow furrowing.
“But you said that’s the last step,” she said. “If he gets that, the money transfers.”
“It will look like it’s transferring,” I said. “But we are going to change the destination.”
I stood up and walked to the window.
I parted the plastic blinds and looked out at the gray asphalt of the parking lot.
The sky over Denver was heavy with clouds, promising rain.
“How do we do that?” Chloe asked behind me.
“We don’t do it alone,” I said, turning back to face her. “We need to set a trap.”
I walked back to the table and picked up my own phone.
I opened the contact list and scrolled down to a name I had kept saved for months.
“Lucas thinks he’s the only one who knows how to navigate his employer’s system,” I said. “But he forgot that I spent three years helping him set up his home network.”
“Who are you calling?” Chloe asked.
“A friend,” I said. “And then, the people who actually own that money.”
I tapped the screen and put the phone to my ear.
