“And then we’re free?” Chloe asked.

She was playing her part now, but the pain in her eyes was real.

“Then we are completely free,” Lucas said. “The Melanie Harper identity will be fully funded, and your sister won’t be able to touch a single dime.”

Chloe flinched at the mention of me.

“What about Anne?” Chloe asked, her voice trembling. “What happens to her when she finds out?”

“Anne is irrelevant,” Lucas said.

His voice was completely devoid of emotion.

It was like he was talking about an old piece of furniture he was planning to leave by the curb.

“She’ll spend the next five years tying herself in knots with the forensic accountants,” Lucas said. “By the time she figures out where the money went, we’ll be on the other side of the world.”

Chloe looked down at her lap, a single tear spilling over her eyelashes.

“She’s my sister, Lucas,” she whispered.

“She’s the person who stood between us,” Lucas corrected her. “Remember that. She had everything, and she never shared it with you.”

I sat perfectly still, my hands resting on my knees.
