“We will find a smaller place,” my father said. “Close to the ocean, perhaps. Somewhere we can start over.”

Later that afternoon, Ramiro met my father in the study to begin dismantling the hidden security monitors.

I walked into the room as they were packing the black boxes into a cardboard container.

The wall where the secret screen had been was now just empty plaster.

“We are almost finished here, Señorita Daniela,” Ramiro said.

“Thank you, Ramiro,” I said. “For everything you did to help us find the truth.”

“I was only doing my job,” Ramiro said. “But I am glad the truth was found.”

My father walked over to Ramiro and shook his hand warmly.

“You did far more than your job, Ramiro,” my father said. “You kept my daughters safe when I was blind.”
