She stopped at Martina’s door and looked both ways down the empty hall.

I felt Martina stiffen beside me.

“She went into my room,” Martina whispered, her voice cracking.

On the screen, Patricia turned the brass doorknob and slipped inside.

A second later, the feed switched to an interior view of Martina’s bedroom.

This was a camera I did not know existed, hidden inside the wooden casing of the grandfather clock.

Patricia walked over to the dresser.

She opened the top drawer where Martina kept her keepsake boxes.

She took a silver watch and a diamond bracelet out of the velvet pouch.

She tucked them beneath a stack of Martina’s winter sweaters.

“You said you lost those,” I said, my voice cold as I looked at Patricia.

Patricia’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Her eyes darted toward the hallway door, then back to the screen.

“I found them on the floor,” Patricia lied, her voice rising in pitch. “I was putting them away for her so they wouldn’t get lost.”

My father shifted his weight, his leather shoes creaking slightly on the polished floor.
