He kept his eyes on my father.

“Sir,” Ramiro said, his voice flat and steady. “You need to see this.”

Patricia took a step toward my father, her silk skirt rustling against the counter.

“Ramiro, not now,” Patricia said, her voice sharp. “We are dealing with a family emergency.”

She pointed a manicured finger at the silver pouch on the counter.

“Rosa has been stealing from us,” Patricia said. “We do not need security distractions right now.”

I moved closer to my younger sister, Martina.

Martina was trembling, her small fingers clutching the sleeve of my sweater.

I squeezed her shoulder, keeping my eyes fixed on Patricia.

“What is on the tablet, Ramiro?” I asked.

Patricia glared at me, her eyes narrowing into thin slits.

“Daniela, stay out of this,” Patricia said. “This is adult business.”

My father looked from the glowing screen in Ramiro’s hand to the diamonds on the marble.

The wind rattled the kitchen window again, louder this time.

“Let him speak, Patricia,” my father said quietly.

Ramiro stepped fully into the kitchen, his heavy boots clicking on the tile.
