“But you never look,” he said.

“You never see what is right in front of your face.”

01:05.

My heart was hammering against my ribs.

“Nora,” I said. “Think.”

“Where would he hide something like that?”

Nora looked around the cellar, her eyes darting to the stone archways.

“The study,” Nora said.

“He spent hours in the library when you were away, Adrian.”

“He said he was organizing the archives.”

“No,” Caleb said, his voice mocking.

“Too obvious.”

“You’re running out of time, Adrian.”

“You can stay here and die with me, or you can run.”

“But if you run, you’ll never find Lila.”

I looked at the phone in my hand.

The screen was dark.

I pressed the power button, but the display remained black.

The battery was dead.

“Marcus, keep him here,” I said.

“Daniel, come with me.”

“Nora, stay behind Marcus.”

“We need that keycard,” I said.

“If we don’t find it, the whole north wing goes down.”

“And Lila is in the house,” Nora whispered.

“She’s inside,” I said.

I turned and ran toward the stone steps leading out of the cellar.
