Officer Cho met me at the heavy security door.

“He’s in the back,” Cho said, gesturing for me to follow him. “He’s been there all night.”

“Has he talked?” I asked.

“He’s terrified,” Cho said. “His mother hasn’t sent a lawyer. He thinks she’s abandoned him.”

“She probably has,” I said. “Eleanor only protects the people who are useful to her.”

Cho led me to the observation room behind the interrogation room.

Through the one-way mirror, I could see Gareth.

He looked exhausted, his expensive clothes stained with mud, his head resting in his hands.

A detective sat across from him, tapping a pen against a legal pad.

“We have the video, Gareth,” the detective was saying. “It’s a federal-grade security camera. We can see the brand of the crowbar.”

Gareth didn’t look up.

“I wasn’t trying to steal anything,” he muttered. “I was just getting something back.”

“What were you getting back?” the detective asked.

“A drive,” Gareth said, his voice trembling. “It has… files on it. Personal files.”

“Whose files?” the detective asked.

Gareth hesitated, his shoulders shaking.
