The Silent Takeover of the Only Home I Ever Truly Owned
I looked up at the kitchen ceiling, where the water stain had been painted over.
“Those were minor repairs,” I said.
“Paid with joint funds because we both live here.”
“Exactly,” Rylan said, a strange, satisfied smile playing on his lips.
“We’ve invested heavily in this property.”
“And honestly, Calla, the way you’re acting lately… I’m worried about your mental state.”
“You’re shouting, you’re freezing people out, you’re hoarding this place like a child.”
Solene carried her suitcase toward the downstairs guest bedroom.
“I’ll put my things in here for now,” she said.
“Though I think the master bedroom has much better light.”
“Do not put your bags in there,” I said, my voice rising despite my efforts to keep it steady.
Solene stopped, her hand on the brass doorknob.
She looked at Rylan, her eyebrows raised in expectation.
Rylan stepped in front of me, blocking my path to the hallway.
“Go ahead, Mom,” he said.
“Calla needs to calm down.”
“She’s having another one of her episodes.”
“I am not having an episode!” I yelled.
The sound of my own voice startled me.
