“So you used me?” I asked, a sudden spark of anger cutting through my fear. “You put me in this room, with this phone, knowing he would find me?”

“I put you in the safest place in Chicago,” Adrian said.

“He is in your garden, Adrian!” I yelled, my voice cracking.

“He is exactly where I can see him,” Adrian countered.

The radio on his belt beeped again.

“Sir,” the security guard’s voice returned. “The target has bypassed the second gate. He’s moving toward the west wing.”

“Is the system recording?” Adrian asked into the radio.

“Yes, sir. We have his signature on the keycard reader. He used the override code.”

“Perfect,” Adrian said.

He clipped the radio back to his belt.

“Who used the code?” I asked. “Marcus?”

“No,” Adrian said. “My head of security for this wing.”

My stomach dropped.

“Julian?” I asked.

Julian had been the one who welcomed me when I first arrived at the estate.

He had shown me to my room, offered me tea, and assured me I was safe.

“He’s been on Vance’s payroll for three years,” Adrian said.
