“He flaggged the transfers as soon as they cleared the threshold.”

“You weren’t as clever as you thought, Graham.”

“You used the same IP address from our house in Highland Park to access the server.”

“You didn’t even use a secure network.”

He covered his face with his hands.

The silence in the room was absolute now, broken only by the hum of the traffic outside.

The rain had started to fall, streaking the high glass windows of the boardroom.

“It’s over,” he said into his hands.

“Yes,” I said.

“It is.”

I turned toward the door and picked up my coat.

“Arden, wait,” he said, looking up.

“What are you going to do?”

“I’m going downstairs,” I said.

“The federal investigators are waiting in the lobby.”

“They’ve been there since one o’clock.”

He stood up quickly, his chair scraping loudly against the hardwood floor.

“Don’t do this,” he begged, his eyes wide.

“We can still negotiate.”

“I’ll give you everything.”

“I don’t want your money, Graham,” I said.

“I just want my life back.”

I walked out of the boardroom, leaving the door open behind me.
