Graham took a step back, his knees hitting his chair again.
“It’s not what it looks like,” Graham said.
“It looks like grand larceny,” Elliot said.
The desk phone on the boardroom table began to beep.
It was the intercom line from the receptionist.
Elliot reached out and pressed the speaker button.
“Yes, Sarah?” Elliot said.
“Mr. Crane,” Sarah’s voice came through the speaker, trembling even more than before. “The compliance officers say they cannot wait any longer.”
“Are they coming up?” Elliot asked.
“They are in the elevator now,” she said.
“Thank you, Sarah,” Elliot said.
He disconnected the call.
We all looked at the elevator doors at the end of the private hallway.
The soft chime of the elevator arriving echoed through the quiet suite.
The heavy glass doors of the lobby opened.
We could hear the sound of footsteps on the hardwood floor outside the boardroom.
Graham looked at me, his eyes filled with a mixture of hatred and fear.
“You planned this,” he whispered.
“I just watched,” I said. “You did the work.”
The door handle of the boardroom began to turn.
