“What is that?” Daniel asked, his voice barely a breath.

I didn’t answer him.

I kept my eyes on Vivian as her gaze dropped to the envelope in my hand.

Vivian’s eyes narrowed as she stared at the red wax seal.

“Is this another one of your pathetic attempts at a scene, Maya?” Claire asked, stepping closer to her mother.

“Be quiet, Claire,” Vivian said, though her voice lacked its usual sharp certainty.

She did not reach for the envelope.

“Take it, Vivian,” I said, my voice quiet and steady.

“I am your mother-in-law,” she said, her chest rising as she drew herself up.

“You will address me with respect.”

“You are a guest in my resort,” I replied.

“And you are holding a debt you cannot pay.”

Daniel reached out, his hand shaking slightly as he tried to take the envelope from my fingers.

“Maya, please,” he muttered, looking around the edge of the screen separating us from the main ballroom.

“People are looking. Let’s just go home and talk about this.”

“We are not going home, Daniel,” I said.
