Mr. Han stood a step behind me, his arms crossed over his chest, his expression completely blank.
“Is that… is that the banking commission?” Daniel asked, his eyes darting back to the man in the grey suit.
“Yes,” I said.
“They are here for the local holdings,” Daniel said, the words slipping out like a slow leak. “The assets we used as collateral for the expansion.”
“Your father’s old legacy,” I added.
Claire let out a sharp, choked sound behind him.
“Daniel, do something,” Claire hissed, grabbing her brother’s jacket sleeve. “Tell them there’s been a mistake. We can’t have federal agents walking through a public gala.”
“Shut up, Claire,” Daniel snapped, his shoulder twitching as he pulled away from her grip.
He didn’t look at his sister.
His eyes were locked on mine, wide and bloodshot, filled with a panic I had never seen in him during our three years of marriage.
