He carried a leather briefcase in his right hand, his leather shoes squeaking slightly on the polished wood floor.

“Ethan, thank God you’re still awake,” Daniel said, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses.

“We have an emergency with the board members regarding the merger.”

He looked at me, his eyes narrowing slightly as he noticed my presence near the cribs.

“What is the night cleaner still doing here at this hour?” Daniel asked.

“Grace is helping me with the children,” Ethan said, his voice completely flat.

“Why are you here, Daniel?”

Daniel set his briefcase on the changing table, right over the spot where the hidden panel lay.

“The auditors are looking into Claire’s old accounts,” Daniel said, taking off his leather gloves.

“They found some minor discrepancies in the funding for the new pediatric wing.”

“I need you to sign these release forms so I can handle it before it gets to the press.”

I watched Daniel’s hands; they were trembling slightly despite his calm tone.

I stood near the door, my fingers still touching the note in my pocket.

“Is that why Claire died, Daniel?” Ethan asked quietly.
