“Dr. Vance was talking to someone on the phone tonight,” I told him.

“He said if you found out the truth, they would be ruined.”

Ethan looked at me, his gaze searching my face.

For a long moment, the only sound was the crackle of the fireplace.

He was trying to decide if he could trust a night cleaner.

I stood my ground, keeping my hands folded in front of me.

“Why are you helping me, Grace?” he asked quietly.

“Because I know what it feels like to live with a lie,” I said.

He closed his eyes for a brief second.

When he opened them, the grief in them had turned into something cold and sharp.

“We need the rest of the records,” he said.

“The complete surgical file.”

“The hospital keeps those in a secure off-site vault in the city.”

“Only a direct family member or a legal representative can request them.”

He walked over to the window and looked out at the falling snow.

“If I ask for them officially, Daniel will know,” Ethan said.

“He monitors all our corporate legal requests.”
