“We will let him think you are gone.”

“And while he is celebrating his deal, we will look into the records.”

“Claire’s files are sealed,” I said. “Even the hospital staff couldn’t access them.”

“They are sealed by court order,” Ethan said. “Under the guise of medical privacy.”

“But there is a copy.”

“An unredacted copy of her final toxicology report and admission chart.”

“Where?” I asked.

“In the hospital’s off-site archive,” Ethan said. “In the basement of the old medical center in Chicago.”

“It is scheduled for destruction next week.”

“We have to get it before then,” I said.

“Yes,” Ethan said.

“But I cannot go there myself without Daniel knowing.”

“My security team reports to the board,” he explained.

“I will go,” I said.

Ethan looked at me for a long time.

The hum of the diner’s refrigerator was the only sound between us.

“It is dangerous, Grace,” he said.

“They are watching the archive.”

“I am already involved,” I said. “I want to know what happened to her.”

“Why?” Ethan asked. “Why do you care this much?”
