“By the time he called for help, Claire’s heart had already stopped.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No,” he said. “The medical examiner’s report said it was an amniotic fluid embolism.”
“It was a complication. No one was at fault.”
“The medical examiner is Dr. Vance’s brother-in-law,” I said quietly.
Ethan went completely still.
The color drained from his lips.
“How do you know this?” he asked.
“Because I found the original incident report,” I said.
“One of the floor nurses, Sarah, wrote it out by hand.”
“She was crying in the breakroom.”
“She told me she couldn’t live with the lie.”
“I told her she had to file it.”
“She was too afraid. She knew what they would do to her.”
“So I took the paper.”
“I went to the hospital director’s office the next morning.”
I reached into my apron pocket and touched the small, folded piece of paper I always kept with me.
It was a photocopy of the original.
“I showed it to him,” I said.
“I told him we had to go to the police.”
