“He just confessed.”

Sophia walked closer, her boots crunching on the gravel.

She looked down at Caleb, who was still shivering in the dirt.

“I heard him,” Sophia said.

“I’ve been tracking his phone.”

“Caleb Reed, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder.”

She pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt.

Caleb didn’t fight her.

He held out his wrists, letting the metal click into place.

“You have to protect me,” Caleb pleaded as Sophia guided him toward her patrol car.

“If Margaret finds out I talked, I’m dead.”

“The state police are already setting up a perimeter around the estate,” Sophia told him.

“You’re going to a holding cell in the next county.”

She closed the rear door of her car and turned back to me.

“We need that recording, Daniel,” she said.

“Without it, Margaret’s lawyers will tear Caleb’s confession apart in court.”

“I’ll get it,” I said.

“I’m coming with you,” Sophia said.

“No,” I replied, looking back at the truck where Leo was sleeping.

“Take Caleb in.”

“I’ll meet you at the precinct with the files.”
