The Silent Mirror and the Lies That Broke My Family
“Get out of the backseat,” I said, my voice dangerously quiet.
“Get out right now, Caleb.”
“I had nowhere else to go,” he stammered, his teeth chattering.
“She’s going to kill me, Daniel.”
“She’s going to kill both of us.”
“Move,” I repeated, keeping my eyes on him through the mirror as I unbuckled my belt.
I opened my door, the cold rain immediately soaking my hair and face.
I stepped out, pulled open the rear door, and grabbed Caleb by the collar of his wet jacket.
I hauled him out into the mud.
He stumbled and fell to his knees, weeping into the gravel.
“I didn’t want any of this,” he sobbed, his hands covering his face.
“She made me do it.”
“She told me she’d pay my debts if I just kept my mouth shut about the clinic.”
“What did you do to Emily?” I demanded, towering over him in the dark.
“What did you and Margaret do to my wife?”
“The medicine,” Caleb choked out, looking up at me through the rain.
“Dr. Vale gave her something to make her weak.”
